Thousands of Yolanda-affected families get access to safe water
Almost six years after the most powerful typhoon to hit land wreaked havoc in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, displaced residents in Eastern Visayas begin to enjoy the safety and accessibility of clean water due to numerous water system projects carried out in their permanent relocation sites.
The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) and various water districts spearheaded the water construction and installation projects at permanent houses built by the National Housing Authority (NHA).
So far, almost seven thousand families in these units now have piped water at the comfort of their homes. These include the 1,320 housing units provided with connections by the Metro Carigara Water District with its P5-million budget; the 3,497 connections to housing units in three barangays – Sta. Cruz, Tingib and Guia – in Pandan, Antique completed by the Pandan Water District; and, the 1,992 households in Barangay E. Lopez, Silay Negros Occidental for which the Silay Water District had earmarked almost P15 million.
Many other water system projects are still ongoing or near completion. Among them is the P565-million water supply system project which includes new water source development and pipeline installation of the Leyte Metropolitan Water District. The project is among the biggest — since the province was the hardest-hit area during Yolanda’s onslaught. It covers 20 resettlement areas with over 14 thousand permanent housing units.
Other ongoing projects include those by Naval Water District in Biliran Province, which is worth P11 million and to benefit 1,774 households; and those other projects being undertaken by local water districts in Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Biliran, Cebu, Leyte and Eastern Samar Provinces.
NHA Resettlement Sites in municipalities without Local Water District will be clustered and will soon be implemented by Pandan WD in Antique and Capiz Provinces; by Metro Kalibo WD in Aklan Province; by Silay City WD in Negros Occidental; by Balamban WD in Northern Cebu to include the Islands of Bantayan and Camotes; by Metro Carigara WD in Leyte and Biliran Provinces and by Guiuan WD in Samar and Eastern Samar Provinces.
